What is Forces Help to Buy?
The low rate of home ownership in the armed forces is being addressed by the government’s £200-million Forces Help to Buy Scheme (FHTB). Launched in April 2014, the scheme has been extended to the end of December 2022.
Put simply, the scheme helps service personnel borrow up to 50% of their salary, to a maximum of £25,000, interest-free.
This can be used to buy your first home, move to another property on assignment, or respond to your family’s changing needs.
What are Military specific mortgages?
While a mortgage for military personnel is just like any other mortgage, It’s much easier to work with lenders that recognise and are comfortable with the fact that your lifestyle is often very different from someone with a standard nine-to-five job.
A standard residential mortgage will allow you to rent out your home as you serve abroad. You can also purchase a home in the UK for your return, or for your family to live in while you are out of the country.
